How to Care For & Maintain Your Carpet
If you have invested in a new carpet, you will no doubt want it to look freshly laid, even if you have had it for a while. Fortunately, there are a few simple maintenance techniques and tips that will help to ensure that your carpets look as good as new for many years to come.
The most important element of good carpet maintenance is preventing dirt from accumulating and stains from appearing in the first instance.
Keep on Top of Dust and Dirt
Care should be taken to avoid dust particles and dirt from working deeper and deeper into the pile of your carpet. Once this starts to happen, your carpet can begin to suffer from discolouration and the loose dust and dirt can have an abrasive effect on the fibres. To prevent this from happening, your carpet should be vacuumed on a regular basis. Aim for two to three times each week at the very least.
For optimum results, loop pile carpets are best cleaned with the suction head of a cylinder to minimise the risk of snagging, whilst an upright vacuum with brush and beater bar is best used to lift and loosen dirt in the case of cut pile carpets.
Using a good quality doormat at entry points will prevent dirt and dust from being brought into your home and contaminating the carpet. Rugs may also offer added protection in high traffic areas.
It is also essential that you routinely clean these areas in order to prevent potentially damaging dirt and dust from becoming ingrained or spreading elsewhere. When cleaning your carpet yourself, it’s crucial that you don’t leave any residue behind. This will actually speed up the rate at which your carpet becomes dirty again.
Act Fast with Spillages
Any spillages should be cleaned up straight away in order to prevent stains from forming. Act quickly, blotting off as much liquid as possible using a clean and dry white cloth or kitchen towel. Use a plastic spatula if there are any semi-solid substances involved.
A damp, clean cloth should then be used to blot at the stain, making sure that you work your way from the outside inwards to prevent the stain from spreading. It is really important that you dab at the stain rather than scrubbing at the pile and never be tempted to over-soak the area.
Any local cleaning agent should be used on a cloth rather than straight onto your carpet. The area should be rinsed using clean water and take great care to ensure it’s not made too wet. Use dry kitchen towel to blot away any remaining moisture and allow the surface to dry naturally.
If the stain remains or returns, you may need to call in professional carpet cleaners to fully restore the appearance of your carpet.
