The Right Mattress For Back Pain Sufferers
If you suffer from back pain it is important to choose the right mattress in order to ensure a decent, pain-free night’s sleep. In fact, in choosing the wrong mattress you could exacerbate the level of back pain that you experience. People tend to either have a favourite sleeping position or to circulate through them all.
Back sleepers
Those who sleep on their back need to have a firm mattress; firm enough to support the lower back while being sufficiently soft to adjust to your body. The balance is delicate. An overly stiff mattress tends to push against the spine while too-soft a mattress will not offer appropriate support. A medium to firm mattress is ideal for sleepers of this type. Firm mattresses have historically been suggested for people with back pain. However, in many cases this was simply because, prior to the development of larger than double sized beds, movement was restricted and most people tended to sleep on their backs.
Side sleepers
For people who sleep on their sides, a slightly softer mattress is necessary to cushion and gently support the shoulders and hips throughout the night.
Stomach sleepers
Stomach sleepers (who in many cases sleep this way because of lower back pain) need a much firmer mattress to keep them afloat, otherwise the spine will be insufficiently supported in the mid abdominal region, exacerbating their back pain.
Most sleepers tend to adopt a combination of one or more of these styles, leading to a fair degree of movement throughout the night. The spine has a series of natural curves from the cervical to thoracic and into the lumbar region. As the sleeper adjusts position, these curves need to be maintained and supported in order to deliver pain free sleep.
A memory foam mattress is widely held to be the best mattress for back pain because it provides good motion isolation, while still being firm and yet malleable. Indeed, these types of mattresses are good for most sleepers. There are now some premium mattresses that combine the advantages of foam with traditional coil springs that help to prevent any sagging.
For serious back problems you should always seek medical advice. However, many companies that supply beds now have experts in their showrooms who can discuss your specific requirements and recommend the best possible mattress type. This applies in equal measure in choosing the best mattress for back pain. CMS Downs have a complete collection of different types of beds in Woking, Newbury and Winchester along with expert advice.
